Identify features on the map

If you want to know about a feature on the map, you can get more information about it using the Identify Identify tool tool.  For tax information on a parcel, use the Properties tool. Properties tool

To identify a feature

  1. In the Toolbar, click the Identify Identify tool button. The button changes to a light background Identify tool - selected to indicate it is the active tool.
  2. A new panel will appear asking which layer(s) you would like to identify.

    1. Top-most layer: Select this option to show a single entry for the layer that is shown on top of everything else in the map.
    2. Visible layers: This selection will list all features that are currently checked in the Contents area.
    3. Dispatch layers (default): All layers valid to an emergency call will be listed
    4. Using this selection will display information from the following layers:

      Circuit Court Probation Districts
      Parcels
      ESN
      AAA Wrecker Dispatch
      Ambulance Dispatch
      Area Wrecker Dispatch
      Contract Wrecker Dispatch
      Fire Dispatch
      Marine Unit Patrol Dispatch
      School Resource Officers
      Community Police Officers
      Street and Road Centerlines
      City and Townships

    5. All layers: Every layer that has a feature in the selected point or rectangle will be displayed.
      Note: Using this option could cause the retrieval process to take a significant amount of time to return values.
  3. Click or drag a rectangle (especially helpful for points) around the feature on the map you want to identify. An identify icon Map icon for identify will be placed on the map at the location clicked (or the center of the rectangle). A callout label will also be placed near the location, with the name of the feature found, if any.

  4. To view details (attributes) for the feature, click the gray down-arrow at the right side of the callout label. This expands the callout box to show the attributes of the feature, as well as the layer name, and an option to add to results (see below).

  5. Multiple features may be found at the location clicked. To see the other features, hover the cursor over the name of the feature in the identify callout. The name will change to a drop-down list appearance:

    Click the drop-down arrow to see the other feature names, if any. Click the other feature to see its details in the callout label box.
  6. If you want to keep this identify result for later use, click the drop-down button on the right side of the callout label, and choose Add to Results (see graphic above). After a few moments, an entry for the location should appear in the Results section. The Location will display the coordinates of the location clicked. See Using Results for more on working with features in the Results window.
  7. To close the identify callout box that appears on the map, click the close button Identify close button        on its upper right. The identify callout will also be dismissed when the map zooms or pans.

To identify a parcel

  1. In the Toolbar, click the Properties Properties tool button. The button changes to an indented border Identify tool - selected indicating it is the active tool.
  2. Click on the parcel you want to identify. A dollar icon Map icon for parcel will be placed on the map at the location clicked. A label will also be placed near the location, with the Permanent Parcel Number, name of the parcel owner, and address if any.

  3. To view details for the property, click the State Equalized Value hyperlink.
  4. Select "Pop-up window for parcel properties" in the Options panel to have a new window open automatically.
    Note: Popup blockers will have to be configured to allow this.
    When this option is selected, a gray down-arrow at the right side of the label will appear. Clicking this expands the box to show the current State Equalized Value and Taxable Value of the parcel within the map, as well as Owner Identification and other classifications.

  5. To close the parcel box that appears on the map, click the close button Close the popup on its upper right. The popup will also be automatically closed when a zoom or pan is performed for the map.
