Adding text and images to the map

The Redline tool allows you to "draw" on the map with a variety of instruments. Anything added with a Redline tool will be included in a Printed version of the map. See below for how you can add labels, shapes and other graphics.

Label

  1. In the Toolbar click the Redline Redline tool tool.
  2. Select the Label button.

  3. Select the Font, Size and Color desired. Changes made in these fields will be reflected in the preview pane at the bottom of the window.
  4. Type the desired text in the Label Text area. Line feeds (Enter key) can be included in this box. Keep in mind that the size of the preview text is the size used on the map. The formatting fields can be modified after the text is entered to get the best layout.
  5. Select the Place Label tool Draw Label icon from the Add Label panel.
  6. Click on the map where you would like the top left corner of the label to start.
  7. To delete a label, click the Delete Label Delete Label tool and drag a rectangle around the label(s) to remove.
  8. If all labels need to be removed, click the Delete All Labels Delete All Labels icon. Click OK on the confirmation box that appears.

Shape

Point or Line

The Point tool allows the addition of a Circle, Cross, Square, Star or Triangle to the map. Line types include Solid, Dash Dash, Dot Dot, Dash Dot Dash Dot and Dash Dot Dot Dash Dot Dot.

  1. Click the Redline Redline tool tool in the Toolbar.
  2. Select the Shape button.

  3. Select the Place Point tool Place Point or Place Line Place Line icon from the Draw Shape panel.
  4. Select the desired Type, Width and Color. Changes made in these fields will be reflected in the preview pane at the bottom of the window.
  5. Click on the map where you would like to center a point or start a line of the selected type.
  6. For a line, move the mouse and click the next point(s). Double-click to end the line.
Polygon or Rectangle

The Polygon and Rectangle tools allow surrounding an area with a filled shape drawn by dragging the mouse.

  1. Click the Redline Redline tool tool in the Toolbar.
  2. Select the Shape button.

  3. Select the Place Polygon tool Place Polygon or Place Rectangle Place Rectangle icon from the Draw Shape panel.
  4. Select the desired Fill Pattern and Color and Border Width and Color. Changes made in these fields will be reflected in the preview pane at the bottom of the panel.
  5. Click on the map where you would like to start drawing the shape.
  6. The line(s) will appear black as you draw and change to the desired color when finished.
  7. For a Polygon, move the mouse and click the next corner(s). Double-click to end the shape.
  8. For a Rectangle, drag the move to the opposing corner of the quadrilateral.
Deleting Shapes
  1. To delete a shape, click the Delete Shape Delete Shape tool and drag a rectangle around the shape(s) to remove.
  2. If all shapes need to be removed, click the Delete All Shapes Delete All Shapes icon. Click OK on the confirmation box that appears.
  3. The Clear Clear tool tool in the Toolbar can also be used to delete all Labels, Shapes and Graphics. No confirmation is requested when using this icon.

Graphics

  1. In the Toolbar click the Redline Redline tool tool.
  2. Select the Graphics button.

  3. Select the desired Graphic from the drop down list. The icon next to the down arrow changes when a new image is selected.
  4. If none of the listed Graphics are desirable, a temporary image from your own collection can be uploaded and placed on the map.
    • Click the Browse... button next to the File to upload box.
    • Requirements
      1. The file to upload must have .gif, .jpg, .bmp or .ico at the end of the file name.
      2. Size must be smaller than 512 KB.
      3. Dimension height and width may not exceed 128 pixels.
      This information can be seen by selecting the Details view of the Choose File window.

    • Select the file and click Open.
    • Click the Upload image button.
    • If the file meets the requirements listed above, the file name will be added to the end of the list and automatically selected.
    Note: Images that are uploaded will only be available during the current session (i.e. once the map is closed, the image will need to be uploaded again to use it).
  5. Select the Place Graphic tool Place Graphic icon from the Add Graphic panel.
  6. Click on the map where you would like the center of the Graphic to be placed.
  7. To delete a Graphic, click the Delete Graphic Delete Graphic tool and drag a rectangle around the Graphic(s) to remove.
  8. If all Graphics need to be removed, click the Delete All Graphics Delete All Graphics icon. Click OK on the confirmation box that appears.
