Select features from an active layer

The Select tool allows drawing a shape around an area to display details about features from a single "Active" layer. Selected features can be shown in the Results panel or in a popup window table format.

Select without a buffer

  1. Zoom or pan to the area of the map you would like to interrogate.
  2. Click the Select tool Select tool in the Toolbar.
  3. Select a layer from the Active Layer drop down list.

  4. Choose from adding selected features to Results or popping up a new window in table format.
  5. By default, the shape type is a Select with rectangle rectangle. If another shape is desired,
    select the point Select with point, polyline Select with line or polygon Select with polygon tools.
  6. Click or drag on the map to select an area. Double-click to end a polyline or polygon.
  7. Features found in the drawn area will display in the selected location.

Select with a buffer

If you would like to automatically expand the shape drawn by a certain distance, turn on the Include buffer with select tool in the Options panel.

  1. Start by clicking the Search tool Select Buffer tool in the Toolbar.
  2. Specify a distance in the Buffer box.

  3. Select a unit of measure from the drop down list.
  4. Click the point Select with point, line Select with line, polygon Select with polygon or rectangle Select with rectangle tool.
  5. Draw a shape on the map to display attributes from the Active Layer in the selected panel.

Exporting data

Attributes from the selected features can be exported to an Excel format for inclusion in mail merge or other types of mailing label programs.

  1. Be sure to select Display selection in a table before drawing on the map.
  2. When features are selected, a new panel will appear in the middle of the screen with detailed information about the selected features.

  3. If more than ten (10) features are selected, paging links will appear near the bottom of the grid.
  4. Select the type of file you would like to export (Excel or CSV) in the bottom left of the popup window.
  5. Click the Export button.
  6. A new window will appear asking if you would like to Open or Save the exported file.

    Note: Popup blockers must be configured to allow popups from this website for the export to work properly.
  7. Click Open if you would like to start Excel automatically, or Save if you would like to keep the file on your system for further manipulation.

Clearing selections

To remove the drawn shape, click the Clear Clear Shape tool in the Select Buffer panel. Use the Clear Features tool (same icon) in the Toolbar of the map to deselect the features from the Active Layer. All entries in the Results panel will be removed and the panel will be automatically hidden using this tool.
